Cast Interview: Ashley Carruthers

Introducing our new Jerry Lee Lewis! Get to know our newest cast member, Ashley Carruthers

How did you first get into music and playing the piano?

Well my great grandma gave my family a piano, so it was always in the house, and my older sister was having lessons, and it’s basically my aim in life to annoy her and everything that she does. So I went along to the lessons, and started having my own as well.

How does it feel to be making your musical theatre debut?

Really Excited! I lived in London before, but not as a performer. So it’s very exciting, because obviously a lot of the great musicals come out of London and England, so it’s very exciting to be over here and to be jumping in on one.

What are you most looking forward to about being in Million Dollar Quartet?

Just playing the music that I love! The rock and roll music of Jerry Lee Lewis, and that’s what I love to play, so it’s just a joy to be doing this show every day.

What interested you in the role and Jerry Lee Lewis’ character?

Well I’ve always watched his music and listened to it ever since I was a kid. And I’ve loved how he performed, and his approach to rock and roll and music, not necessarily life. Ever since I was a kid I’ve just loved his music, and how he’s done it.

How have you been preparing for the role?

Basically just doing a lot of what I normally do, which is playing the music of people like Jerry Lee and Little Richard and that era, the rock and roll heavy piano players. So I’ve been watching everything that Jerry Lee has ever done, every video all the way back to the early days on the Steve Allen show and through to now, and also some of his other contemporaries. Even listening to people he idolised such as Hank Williams. I’ve read his autobiography, I watched the Dennis Quaid movie ‘Great Balls of Fire’, and yeah trying to cover all basis of how to approach the character that he is.

What is your favourite song from the show to perform?

It’s a tough one it’s got to be ‘Great Balls of Fire’ or ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ it’s two classic songs of Jerry Lee that you just have to love to play.

Who is your biggest music inspiration?

Biggest musical inspiration… I love the music of Jerry Lee Lewis and Ben Folds, they’re kind of a similar take, but yeah Jerry Lee and Ben Folds. This role is pretty fitting.
